Cattleyas Online is the result of Norm and Erin Bulmer growing orchids as a hobby for some 30 years. While we have grown a number of genera our main passion is Cattleyas. Some time ago we started to dabble with our own breeding and this has now expanded into a business. Our aim is to pursue lines of breeding, predominately in exhibition Cattleyas, in an attempt to produce even higher standards in the queen of orchids. We also will be aiming at producing quality compact Cattleyas using some of our exhibition plants in the breeding lines. Located in South East Queensland we are blessed with a climate that is close to ideal for growing Cattleyas. After an initial period of hardening when taken from flask, all plants are grown in a shade house enclosed with 55% cloth. Many of our initial seedlings originated from Vallance’s Orchids in Northern NSW. Gordon Vallance was noted for breeding lines producing many awarded clones (see AOC magazine Feb 02). More awards will come from crosses we offered initially. We are particularly excited with the new yellow and red crosses which will result in an improvement in the quality of Cattleyas available in these colours. Unfortunately it is not viable to send plants to Western Australia or Tasmania in view of the quarantine restrictions those plants have in place. It is possible to comply with the restrictions but the cost of doing so is prohibitive. Autumn 08 Our new seedling are now starting to come through and hopefully there will be quite a number more later this year. Many of the initial crosses we offered are now sold or are in short supply. You should ask if there is a particular cross you are chasing as in some cases we only have a few plants left and so have not listed them on the catalogue. At this point we are pleased with the quality of a number of the advance plants we have flowered. There are some photos in the photo gallery and no doubt more will be added this year.
2007 was a year many orchid growers would rather forget. The drought induced water restrictions were a problem for many while the arid conditions and then record minimum temperatures in many areas caused serious losses. We were fortunate in that we did not lose mature plants but new seedlings did not fare well. Our breeding program also suffered as many pods dropped after the cold and many flowers failed to open properly or dropped along with the pods. Fortunately we received good rain later in the year and have enjoyed an excellent growing season. We’re hoping this means some great flowers in 2008.
To date we’ve received many calls and e-mails thanking us for the size and quality of plants we’ve supplied. It gives us satisfaction to hear you are happy with our plants and we will do our utmost to keep it that way. In the next twelve months many of you will flower some of the plants you have purchased. We would love to hear from you in this regard and a photo or two would be great.
